Last week end, we went for a visit in La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve, near Poigan.

We were invited by the elder Jacob Wawatie to help with
preparing a big camp site at the initiative of Anishinabe Grandmothers.
Next week, great things will take place there: From Saturday July 20th to Friday July 26th, there
will be a full week of workshops and teachings on Anishinabe
spirituality and traditional Anishinabe way of life in the forest. The objective is to pass this on firstly to the Anishinabe
youth, but also to anyone willing to learn. It will
be an important moment for grandmothers and defenders of the land, to
raise awareness about what's happening on the land and what's at stake.

So this is an open invitation to all, to go put up tents
there, meet people from the community (we were told that at least 30 families
are expected) and receive valuable teachings. It will take place in the
forest, at 18 km of gravel road of the 117. Bring your own food. Workshops will be given
primarly in Anishinabe, with translation to french and english.
Donations - $ or food etc - are welcome.

Here are basic directions to go there:
Enter La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve through the 117 road. Pass the sign announcing Lac Roland and a trail (Télébec's apparently?). Just after that, pay attention: there's a sign on the left (assuming you're going North) written "Kokom Camp 18 km". Take this rough road. Pass Lac Antostagan, announced by a sign. The camp is just a bit further.

Here's the Facebook event
The schedule for the week is at the bottom of the page, in comments.

The organizers wish that participants confirm their presence by calling them:

Il s'agit d'une triple invitation:

*** 13H - Prélude ***
D'abord, nous vous invitons à la grande marche Idle No More, 13h à la place Jacques-Quartier. L'aîné anishinabe Jacob Wawatie, de Poigan, y prendra part.
https://www.facebook.com/events/569589999729540/

*** 16H ***

----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a triple invitation:

*** 13:00 - Prelude ***
First, we invite you to the Grand Idle No More March, at 13:00 place Jacques-Cartier. Jacob Wawatie, anishinabe elder from Poigan, will take part in it.
https://www.facebook.com/events/569589999729540/

*** 16:00 ***
* After the march, around 16:00, at Place du Canada (where the march should end) - more precisely in Dorchester Square, Jacob will present a workshop on the subject: "The benefits of nature against industrialisation".

*** 18:00 ***
* Finally, after Jacob's workshop, around 18:00, at the same place, there will be another workshop presented by Philippe Dumont of Greenpeace: a collective and interactive activity to help us build a winning strategy for SOS Poigan. We need your participation and your creativity! No previous knowledge of the cause is required.

We'll meet at Dorchester Square. Look for the SOS Poigan banner.

Workshops will probably be given mainly in french, but we can manage to provide translation if needed.

All these activities are free for everyone. There's going to be free sandwiches for everyone around 17:00. Don't hesitate to bring some food to share yourself.

In case of rainy forecast, we'll inform you the day before of the new place for the workshops. Else, we'll meet at Dorchester Square and move from there if deemed necessary.

We hope to see you on the 21st!

While the clock is ticking to save the forest of Poigan,
we are currently waiting for an answer to our request of a meeting with the minister of Natural Resources, Martine Ouellet. She is one of the very few persons who can intervene and we must remind her of that great responsibility.

In order for this to be succesful, we need a strong support from Quebecers, Canadians, First Nations and citizens of the world. In addition to our still valid petition, we are launching an e-mailing campaign to the prime minister Pauline Marois. The suggested message is simple and direct. We encourage you, of course, to be creative!

Also, we set up a Facebook page, which is another excellent way to follow us, to show your support and to interact with us.

Thank you for your support! This struggle is not only a part of a larger movement for the environment and the respect of native peoples, it's also part of the global resistance to neoliberalism. Helping to save Poigan is a small step toward a healthier, better world.

Call from First Nation Children to Canadians to support their campaign to defeat bills C-38 and C-45

Modifieraient plus de 160 lois et réglementations dans de nombreux domaines, menaçant des droits dûrement gagnés durant les dernières décennies;

Amoindriraient la protection légale de l'eau et de l'environnement, qui a évolué au cours des trois dernières décennies;

Historic movement - Indigenous people unite under the Idle No More
banner to denounce Harper government policies - Join them on December 21
in Montréal.

17/12/2012 - Under the impulse of a spontaneous
movement launched with the #IdleNoMore hashtag on Twitter, protesters
joined across Canada on this past December 10 to protest against the
adoption of omnibus bill C-45 and the Canadian government’s indifference
regarding First Nations. Truly appealing to indigenous people to rally,
the slogan has since gathered momentum and motivated dozens of protests
from Vancouver to Halifax, and now in Montréal. To echo the big
demonstration planned in Ottawa on December 21, members of Québec’s
First Nations and those who support them will meet peacefully in
Montréal on Friday. They will express their support to Chief of
Attawapiskat, Theresa Spence, who has undertaken a hunger strike since
December 11, demanding a meeting with Prime Minister Harper and the
Queen. This last week, the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and
Labrador (AFNQL) and the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) have officially
given their support to Theresa Spence and demanded that the Prime
Minister accept to meet her. The demonstration on 21 December is meant
as a first mobilization drive in Québec. The movement’s members intend
on continuing their efforts until a true nation-to-nation dialogue is
established between the government of Canada and the First Nations. They
also invite all organizations who are sympathetic to their cause to
express it publicly and to join Friday's demonstration.

Contact
Mélissa Mollen Dupuis, Widia Larivière
Amanda Tap’we IronStar, Marie-Celine Charron
idlenomoreqc@gmail.com

For more information on the Idle No More movement:
The official website: http://www.idlenomore.ca/
The Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/IdleNoMoreCommunity?ref=ts&fref=ts
The Canadian and Québec Twitter accounts: @IdleNoMore4 / @IdleNoMoreQC
The Idle No More - Québec Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/groups/466954116690346/
A website documenting the movement’s main events: http://peuplesvisibles.tumblr.com/

Saturday has been historical. The ceremony at the foot of Mount Royal allowed near one hundred persons to gather around elders of all nations including Anishinabe, Mayan, Mohawk, Haïtian and Metis, to reflect on the visceral importance of the forest. Then, an impressive walk down to the Club Lambi concert hall, lantern in hand, filled the place in just a few minutes and for all the duration of the show. The evening was particularly emotional. The unifying speeches, the dynamism of modern urban artists and the sensibility of traditional native artists made Nopimik an amazing encounter in every way.

Before the ceremony, a colorful theatrical protest was held in front of Resolute offices. Participants played the role of forest spirits, who announced their intention to visit Natural Resources minister Martine Ouellet for the holidays. Indeed, with the emergency before us and the length of the legal process, we're attempting to obtain a meeting with the Mrs. Ouellet before the holidays period. However, for this to be succesful, we need a clear support from the public. Thus, we invite you to sign our petition asking for a stop on the logging and to stay alert for our next actions. We also invite you, it goes without saying, to continue spreading the word on the situation at Poigan. It's worth reminding that 60% of the forest will be cut come March 2013 if nothing is done soon.

hip hop, folk, world etc.

Here it is at last!
NOPIMIK Day for the forest is a big artistic event that we're organizing for December 15th, 2012.

The event will begin at 15:00 with an opening ceremony, at the foot of Mount Royal (George-Étienne Cartier Monument in Mount Royal Park), led by elders of all nations, including Anishinabe, Maya and Metis. Then, at 16:30, we'll walk down to the Lambi concert hall, located at 4465 St-Laurent (corner of Mont-Royal) where there'll be a press briefing. The celebration will be composed of chants, drums and traditional dances. Invited artists will also perform on stage with different musical styles: soul, hip hop, folk, world etc. Part of the show will be dedicated to poets, slammers, rappers who will come to deliver their message accompanied by an improvised house music band. Also present will be D.J, V.J., live painting, crafts and information kiosks. A closing ceremony will wrap it all up.

We want that event to be an encounter in many ways: An encounter of traditional ancestral art with modern urban art; an encounter of First Nations with Quebecers of all origins; finally, a convergence of groups, ngos and individuals working in the same direction, for nature and native peoples.

The suggested cover is 5$ (voluntary contribution). However, our first objective is to raise awareness of the cause on a massive scale. In that sense, the mobilization effort for the event is just as important as the event himself. We need you to help spread the word. Help us make this event a spark for a great awakening of consciousnesses!

Thanks in advance, and we hope to see you there!

Around thirty persons gathered before the Palais de justice Wednesday. Given that number, most of us went inside to attend the hearing. The judge still hasn't delivered her judgement. She said she would do that "shortly". Meanwhile, logging continues...

We would like to thank the media who covered the event, as well as all participants.

Here's the press release that was sent to the media.
The Media page has been updated with reports and videos regarding that event.

UPDATE 11-11-2012
The court renewed the injunction granted to Resolute Forest Products, for a longer period of time now... Needless to say, this is a very bad outcome for traditional Algonquins of Poigan. More details to come. Here's the full document of the judgement (in french).Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09394852715612042304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3072606339135133305.post-42829952820517007262012-09-29T00:08:00.003-04:002012-11-10T17:24:51.960-05:003 octobre: Rassemblement devant le Palais de justice, prise deux!

October 3rd: Protest at the courthouse, again, for real!

Mercredi dernier

Last wednesday (september 26th), Jacob Wawatie, of the Algonquin
Traditional Council of Elders of the One Nation, went to court against
Resolute Forest Products. He was accompanied by supporters and fellow
members of his community. The traditional territory of these Algonquins,
"Poigan", a gorgeous area in La Vérendrye wildlife reserve, is being
assaulted by clear-cut logging operations to which the rightful
inhabitants of the land never agreed. And yet that logging is a direct
threat to their traditional way of living, in addition to being harmful
to biodiversity.

At stake before the court: Resolute Forest
Product seeks the extension of an injunction that it initially obtained
in early July against the Algonquins of Poigan, to prevent them from
opposing the cuts directly. Two elders where then arrested - and kept in
jail for 8 days - for trying to protect their territory.

Last
wednesday, the injunction was maybe going to finally expire, and it was
hoped that the court would order an halt to the cuts, at least
temporarily... However, the judge finally announced that he was not in a
position to take this cause himself. So he postponed the hearing and
until then, granted Resolute a one week extension of the injunction.

Which means that it's happening next wednesday!
The hearing is scheduled at 9:30 am. SOS Poigan (a support group for
the traditional Algonquins) invites you to gather before the Palais de
justice in great number, colorful and with a clear message both for the
people inside of the courthouse and the general public. We will stay
there until the hearing is complete. One thing we can be sure is that
Resolute doesn't want the public and media to look at their activities
in parc La Vérendrye... our mission will be to spark that interest.

Bring signs, your voice, music instruments, food... it should be a nice day!

We invite you to join us tomorrow, september 26th, in front of Palais de justice de Montréal, in support of traditional Algonquin people for whom an important decision will be taken in court. To be decided in that hearing, which will take place at 9am in room 2.16, is the possible renewal of the injunction previously obtained by Resolute. Following that injunction, two Elders have been arrested for trying to protect their land.
The rally will start at 8:00 am and a press conference with spokespersons for the Algonquins and SOS Poigan will be held at 8:30. If we're enough people, the rally outside the courthouse will last until the court has made its decision. Pass the word massively, we need to be there in numbers!
